Last week, we lost one of our lecturers. Canon Ephraim was one of my favorite lecturers when I was a student, and it was an honor to work with him when I joined UCU as staff. While I knew he had been diagnosed with cancer a couple years ago, I didn’t realize that he had been originally diagnosed in 2010. That means that he knew he was sick when he was lecturing us.
Canon Ephraim was a fabulous lecturer, and he was a limitless fount of knowledge, and we tried to bleed him dry. I loved how he pushed us, and always asked more of us. When he told the class that he hoped everyone had a copy of my coursework on community in Acts, I was on cloud nine, since that was his stamp of approval.
For the last few months, I’ve gone with the chaplaincy to take Holy Communion to Canon Ephraim and his wife, which has been a joy. The first time I went he was rather surprised to see me, which delighted me to no end – he was generally unflappable. Though it was hard to see him deteriorate with each visit, I am so glad that I got to have that time with him.
