Our faculty retreat has been rather interesting as a member of the faculty. We have had three morning Eucharist services, all of which I have officiated and celebrated. I inherited the registration and logistical duties, and of course, must greet everyone and generally be present. I’m beat.
At Saturday night’s dinner, I found myself at the “high table” on the stage, eating with Stephen and Esther, with whom I had done the Easter Monday baptisms. It was a wonderful reunion of sorts, made all the more fun when after we finished eating, Esther began imitating prominent members of the faculty.
None of this was mean-spirited; her impressions were spot-on, and we were laughing hysterically. That is, until she decided to do an impression of me. I found that one decidedly less funny and accurate.
I’ve known Esther since I came in 2009, so she knows me fairly well. I was surprised by her impression, and then realized that I have indeed been around long enough, and in a high-profile enough place, to be poked at in good fun by the students. I guess I had arrived.
