Mike Flynn taught it to us a few years ago: “Oh God oh God OH GOD oh God!” That was me yesterday afternoon, when I learned that I was scheduled to preach at the Holy Communion service tonight. Ai-yi-yi-yi!
Yes, this is my fault. I did look a the chapel rota at the beginning of the semester. I did not see my name. Truly. In my defense though, there were two lists, and much confusion about who’s on first. But I should have known that I was up.
So, I sent some frantic text requests for prayer, then did some praying on my own. We’re supposed to have the tutor on duty review our sermons prior to preaching, so that made the schedule more compressed. Thankfully, we have no classes on Thursdays, but I had planned to tackle the mountain of assignments on my desk.
I pulled together two typed pages of rough thoughts, and took them to Canon George, the tutor. Canon Moses, one of my lecturers and the practical studies lead, saw me, and said, “oh, you have a framework! I’m so happy!” Well, that makes one of us. Canon Moses reminds me of an African leprechaun anyhow (not tall, always jolly, though mischievous), so his laughter helped lighten my perspective. Still not comforted, but feeling better.
Speaking of which, I need to get back to said sermon.
