One day last week I was sitting next to my friend Isaac, when my friend Henry came up and asked me if I was a Mukiga (Muchiga? that’s how it’s pronounced, and ‘k’ is often pronounced ‘ch’); a member of his tribe, from Western Uganda. Isaac answered no, I’m a Muganda (from central Uganda). Henry looked surprised and said, “Oh! Have they claimed you already?”
So, now I reckon I’m half English, half, German, and half Muganda. Sadly, my Luganda hasn’t progressed much this semester, so I’m slacking.
And since it gets confusing: the tribe is Buganda, a person in the Buganda tribe is a Muganda, and the language is Luganda. That’s a general format, though not consistent across the board, which is a lot like English.
