Happy Women’s Day

March 8, 2016

Who said that we never got anything from socialism?

Like any minor public holiday, only the government and schools are closed. The rest of the world soldiers on.

I went to my favorite produce vendor, and wished her a happy Women’s Day. She returned the greeting, then asked me where her present was.

This rather caught me off guard; I see this woman weekly, yet we’ve never had a much of a conversation beyond the normal pleasantries. I apologized for not being prepared with a gift.

My purchases totaled 9,000 shillings (about $2.75), and since I didn’t have a present for her, I told her that the balance from my 10,000 shillings bill, the 1,000 shillings (about $0.30) was her gift. She laughed, and gave me a small bunch of the sweet tiny bananas as my gift.

Somehow, I think I came out ahead in that exchange.
