Continued vigilance

July 16, 2010

Mom – all is fine.

I just received another message from the State Department, urging everyone to maintain vigilance in and around Kampala.  Ugandan authorities believe the perpetrators of the bombings on Sunday are still at large.  The African Union Summit going on next week, and they (the collective they, not just the State Department) are urging everyone to avoid large crowds, keep alert, etc.

Obviously, this has repercussions… large crowds gather at churches, for example.  And many churches here are large.  There is a consecration in Ankole on Sunday, about a five hour drive west of here.  The Church of Uganda Provincial Assembly is in August, as is the All Africa Bishop’s Conference.

Please continue to pray for safety.  Both the police and the army have been on campus a bit, and were at graduation.  I just learned that there had been a specific threat made against graduation, which explains why there were so many police there, and why one of them was so nasty to us – he was so incredibly tense.  Uganda is no stranger to war, though the younger generation is learning, but I think the terrorist threat from the outside is something that many are struggling to comprehend.  Amin’s days were long ago.
